The City of Bakersfield, located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley
is conveniently situated equal distant to both Fresno and Los Angeles, a metropolitan
region known throughout California for its rich culture, agriculture, natural beauty,
outdoor recreation, oil industry, historic sites and entertainment attractions. Bakersfield is
a fast-growing city that has seen its population triple in the latter part of the 20th century,
owning to its historic economies of oil and agriculture, as well as a modern foray into
the manufacturing and distribution sectors. Bakersfield and Kern County are known
state-wide for their business-friendly policies, including no local utility taxes, inventory
taxes and the lowest sales tax in California, drawing business, jobs and growth to the
area. The Bakersfield region was primarily populated by indigenous tribes until 1776,
when European settlers first arrived in the area. In the wake of the 1848 California Gold
Rush, gold was discovered along the Kern River in 1851; in 1865, oil was discovered
in the valley, bringing a population boom to the San Joaquin Valley. Local historic
attractions include West Kern Oil Museum, Edwards Air Force Base, Silver City Ghost
Town and the Kern County Museum. Bakersfield is buffeted on all sides by breathtaking
natural beauty: located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, it is surrounded
by the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada, Sequoia National Forest, Greenhorn Mountain
Range, Kern Canyon, Tehachapi Mountains and Temblor Range Fault. Shooting, cycling,
boat drag, golfing, water skiing, soccer, youth baseball, tennis, horseshoes, and volleyball,
as well as regional activities including whitewater rafting, off-highway vehicle (OHV)
activities, fly-fishing, rock climbing, river tours, mountain biking, fossil collecting and skiing are enjoyable during the year, owing to our mild climate.

Colonel Allensworth State Park, Fort Tejon State Park, Kern National Wildlife Refuge,
Kern River Preserve, Lake Isabella, Pacific Crest Hiking Trail, Sequoia National Forest,
Tehachapi Loop, Carrizo Plain National Monument, Tule Elk State Natural Reserve,
Tejon Ranch and Wind Wolves Preserve are popular venues for Bakersfield residents to
enjoy the outdoors. For sports fans, Bakersfield Blaze Baseball, Bakersfield Condors
Hockey, and Bakersfield Jam Basketball and college sports teams the Bakersfield
College Renegades, Bakersfield Roadrunners host seasonal events at a variety of
Bakersfield venues. Culturally, the Downtown Arts District and regional area provide
shopping and dining from the familiar to the unique: nationally regarded retail stores,
state-of-the-art shopping mall complexes, antique shops and locally owned boutiques, as
well as the largest concentration of historic and modern Basque restaurants and eateries
in California. Explore the Bakersfield Sound at music venue the Bakersfield Music
Theatre or through the Bakersfield Community Concert Association, who schedules
performances by local musicians, including the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and
Bakersfield Jazz Orchestra. The Buck Owens Crystal Palace offers live concerts a
museum dedicated to Buck Owens and a gift shop that sells souvenir, memorabilia and
albums. The Arts Council of Kern schedules many cultural events at an exciting range of
local arts venues, which include Lori Brock Children's Discovery Museum, Buena Vista
Museum of Natural History, Bakersfield Museum of Art, California Living Museum
(Bakersfield Zoo), Dore Theatre, FLICS International Cinema Society, Metro Art
Galleries, Younger Gallery of Contemporary & Functional Art and the William M. Thomas Planetarium. For local thrills, try Golden West Casino, Six Flags Magic

Gatherings, Bakersfield Greek Festival, Standing Bear Pow Wow, Lowrider Nationals,
Kern County Basque Festival, Bakersfield Native Gathering, Kern County Fair,
Bakersfield Jazz Festival, Via Arte Italian Street Painting Festival, Tehachapi Mountain
Festival, California Hot Rod Reunion, Junior League Wine Fest and the Whiskey Flat
